James joined the Royal Artillery on 11th January 1860 at the age of 20. He was far from being a diligent soldier, indeed his discharge papers point out that he appearred in the regimental defaulters book on 33 occasions and was Court Marshalled on 4 occasions. Most of his service was spent in Britain, however he was in India between 1861 and 1866.
